Current Research

In my research, I examine images of figures that represent the Islamic world, and the Ottoman Empire in particular, during the early modern period. Specifically, I examine portraits of women who represent the complex relationship between Venice (Italy and Europe) and the Islamic world throughout the sixteenth century. In addition, I study contemporary artistic engagement with such imagery, to challenge if not disrupt the canonical frameworks of art history.
