Current Research

My current book project, On the Street of the Hidden Shops, is a metaphoric archaeology of a single block in central Rome, from its geologic foundations to the present. History lies thick here, a museum atop a convent atop an ancient theater; layered in are the traces of artisans and poets, pilgrims and saints, a communist coffee bar, a political assassination, and a fascist deportation. By digging down deep, this creative work of historical narration seeks new ways of understanding the places we think we already know.
